Columbia River Knife and Tool: CRKT Caligo Knife, CR-6215


The CRKT Caligo Knife, designed by Idaho knifemaker TJ Schwarz, is a little workhorse of an EDC that features a 3.185" spear point blade made of 8Cr14MoV stainless steel, .129" thick, with a non reflective black oxide finish, a top swedge, a notched thumb rest for secure grip, and a flipper for ambidextrous one hand opening. The black anodized 6061-T6 aluminum handle, 4.471" closed, has a decorative blue pivot ring for visual appeal, the Flavio Ikoma designed IKBS Ball Bearing Pivot System for smooth opening, finger grooves and palm swell onlay for secure purchase, liner lock, lanyard hole and removable steel pocket clip mounted at the butt end. The Caligo Knife has an overall open length of 7.625", and it weighs 3.4 ounces.

Nice intro to ball bearing flippers 02/14/2018

I'm new to knives. As a frame of reference, other knives I own are a Spyderco G10 Dragonfly and Kershaw Blur. For me, the Caligo is the perfect balance in size b/t these two. I work in an office where I carry my knives fully inside my pocket w/in the inner "coin" pocket which is often present in dress slacks. The Dragonfly can be hard to remove from this inner pocket and the Blur is slightly too large and intimidating for the office. The Caligo sticks out about an inch above the coin pocket which makes it easy to retrieve. The other aspect I like about this knife is the ball bearing flipper action. The knife opens smoothly and closely easily. Having only experience spring assisted and lock-back knives, this is a joy. Other things I like are the aesthetics and the clip which is deep carry and easier to use than either the Dragonfly or Blur which I found too stiff. On the downside, the aluminum can feel a bit sharp. Summary, for $30 this is a great intro to ball bearing flippers.
