The Gerber Hinderer Knives are rescue knives made in collaboration with Rick Hinderer, who drew on his experience as a firefighter and EMT for his designs. Each Hinderer Knife features a heavy duty blade with an oversized thumb stud and external release for easy opening and closing with gloved hands, a safety hook for cutting through seat belts, a window punch for ingress and egress, and an oxygen tank wrench. The handles are made of tough glass filled nylon with finger grooves, texturing and jimping for secure grip.
From the Gerber manufacturer's catalog regarding the Hinderer Knives: This feature-rich rescue knife was conceived by designer Rick Hinderer, himself a firefighter and EMT whose first-hand experience helped him earn an International Knife Award for his effort. The knife has larger, beefier mechanisms for use while wearing turn-out gloves, a thumb stud and external blade release for easy one-handed opening and closing, a built in hook cutter that safely slices seat belts, a window punch, and an oxygen tank wrench on the backside of the handle.
