The illustrated Boker Knife Sharpener is the Boker Vulkanus Pocket Sharpener, designed by Harold Stallegger. The black ABS frame of this Boker knife sharpener holds the rods in an X shape configuration, and the rods have ceramic carbide flats for sharpening.
Paraphrased from the Vulkanus Website: The flats are made of sintered metal that is molded to the right shape in powder form, grouted under high pressure and then baked at very high temperatures in a furnace. The special granularity, temperature pressure and right kind of alloy result in a ceramic-like texture. This procedure results in particularly tough sharpening flats with ductile edges guaranteeing a long durability.
For Sharpening: open the Vulkanus Pocket Sharpener in the "less than" position (tilted toward you), place the knife blade between the sharpening rods and pull the blade through from the handle to the point. Do not twist or turn the blade.
For Honing (fine sharpening): open the Vulkanus Pocket Sharpener in the "greater than" position (tilted away from you), place the knife blade between the sharpening rods and pull the blade through from the handle to the point. Do not twist or turn the blade.
